Start Here: Quick DIY Checklist

Check these common issues first. Many “AC failures” are simple problems that can be corrected without a service call.

1. Power Check – Confirm the thermostat is on, the breaker has not tripped, and the outdoor disconnect switch is engaged.
2. Mode & Temperature – Make sure the thermostat is set to COOL and the temperature is at least a few degrees below the room temperature.
3. Air Filter – A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of weak cooling and system shutdowns.
4. Indoor Switch – Check the air handler switch (often similar to a light switch near the unit) to ensure it has not been turned off.

Short Cycling – The system turns on and off repeatedly. This can stress the compressor and related components.
Ice on the System – Frozen coils or refrigerant lines usually mean the system should be turned off until it can be inspected.
Grinding or Squealing – Unusual mechanical noises often point to motor or fan problems that should not be ignored.
Burning Smell or Electrical Issues – If you smell burning plastic or notice lights dimming when the system starts, shut the power off and call immediately.
