AC Troubleshooting: The Emergency Guide

Don’t panic. Follow these steps before you call for backup.

🛑 Start Here: The DIY Checklist

Check these 4 things first to save yourself a service fee.

1. Power Check: Is the thermostat screen on? Check your circuit breaker and the outdoor disconnect switch.
2. Mode Check: Ensure the thermostat is set to “COOL” and the temp is at least 3° lower than current room air.
3. Airflow Check: When was the last time you changed your filter? A clogged filter is the #1 cause of AC “crashing.”
4. Switch Check: Ensure the indoor air handler switch (often looks like a light switch in the attic/closet) hasn’t been bumped off.

When to Call Only Way Air

If you’ve cleared the checklist and your home is still heating up, you likely have a mechanical or electrical failure. Call a technician immediately if you notice:

🔄 Short Cycling

If your unit turns on and off every few minutes, it’s “short cycling.” This is often a failing compressor or thermostat. Ignoring this will burn out your motor fast.

🧊 The Mid-Summer Crash

Total system failure is often caused by a frozen evaporator coil or a refrigerant leak. If you see ice on the lines, turn the system OFF and call us—running it while frozen can destroy the compressor.

🔊 Grinding or Squealing

Metal-on-metal grinding usually means an unlubricated air handler motor or a loose fan belt. If you hear this, shut it down before the motor seized up entirely.

🔥 Electrical Smells or Dimming Lights

Immediate Hazard: If your lights dim when the AC kicks on or you smell “burning plastic,” you have a serious electrical failure. Do not attempt a DIY fix—cut the power and call us immediately.
